Guest Comments

The Husum House is located in the White Salmon River valley in rural Husum, Washington approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes from
Portland, Oregon and 15 minutes from Hood River, Oregon.

In 2013, the New York Times selected the White Salmon River as 1 of 46 places to visit in the world! See for yourself at #13.

Kayaking and Rafting

The White Salmon River is well known for its world class white water rafting and kayaking and is the home to the former Gorge Games kayaking event. The recent removal of the Condit Dam now provides rafters and kayakers the ability to run the White Salmon all the way down to the Columbia!

There are several rafting companies located near the house.

The house is less than an hour from Mt. Hood Meadows ski resort and Timberline Lodge which operates 12 months of the year

There are also vast amounts of cross country skiing, snowshoing and snowmobiling trails just 30 minutes from the house around the base of Mt Adams.

Hood River has the best variety of restaurants and bars in the immediate area.  But there are many great local restaurants on this side of the river.

A few restaurants of note are:

Washington State has the second most wineries of any state in the country after California.  Oregon is number three.
A few local wineries are:

  • Maryhill winery is a favorite on the Washington side of the Gorge. It has excellent wines, with a nice view of the Gorge and a few related attractions – the Maryhill museum and the full size Stonehenge replica and war memorial.
  • Marchesi Vineyards, in Hood River is another great option on the Oregon side.

Bed & Breakfasts

The Husum Riverside Bed and Breakfast and Husum Highlands are two great B&Bs located in Husum.

Condit Dam Removal

On October 26, 2011 PacifiCorp intentionally breached the Condit Dam after just about 100 years of operation (1913). The dam was located 2 miles south of the Husum House. The former Northwestern Lake has now been replaced by Northwestern Park. With the removal of the dam, salmon and migratory trout can make there way from the ocean all the way up the White Salmon River and past the house for several miles upstream. During migration fish can be seen jumping Husum Falls. Dam removal also provides rafters and kayakers the ability to float all the way down to the mouth of the White Salmon and into the Columbia.

Oregon Public Broadcasting (OPB) and Oregon Field Guide released this documentary on the White Salmon River and dam removal:

For more information you can also visit this great website which details the project, history of the dam, and also shows time lapsed photos and video of the breach:

As mentioned above, with the removal of the dam, salmon and migratory trout now freely swim up past the house for several miles. There are fishing options accesible right off the property and plenty more in the area and nearby creeks and streams. Fishing permits are available at the gas station in BZ Corner 4 miles north of the house on Hwy 141.

The Gorge Fly Shop in Hood River is a great resource for local fishing - equipment, guided tours, rentals or general info.
