The wild beauty of the White Salmon River

The White Salmon River is well known for its world class white water rafting and kayaking and is the home to the former Gorge Games kayaking event. The recent removal of the Condit Dam now provides rafters and kayakers the ability to run the White Salmon all the way down to the Columbia!

TESTIMONIAL

A major highlight of the visit was our stay in the Husum House! The cottage was impeccably clean, very well organized and a warm and cozy atmosphere; The kitchen is spacious and had all the necessary pots, pans, plates, and dishes for fixing meals and the beds and sleeping quarters were so comfortable. Upon your suggestion we went to Everybody's Brewing. They served awesome food and had a selection of great beers on tap. If they had this place in my neighborhood I would go there all the time. The Husum House is the perfect retreat and you can still go out to a local bar and get excellent food and beer after a long day of playing outside. We want to come back!Thank you Matt and Pam for an incredible stay!!

Tasty Local Breweries

TESTIMONIAL

We LOVED the house. I came with my husband and two teenage kids (15 and 17), and two dogs. Amazingly the tv wasn't turned on once!!!! My kids played chess, read, played board games, explored the river... what a gift to not have the tv on once all weekend. The beds were super comfy. The kitchen was so well-stocked that it made it easy to cook and enjoy family meals. And, after the half-marathon, it was a wonderful place to come back to clean up, and relax.

Condit Dam Removal

On October 26, 2011 PacifiCorp intentionally breached the Condit Dam after just about 100 years of operation (1913). The dam was located 2 miles south of the Husum House. The former Northwestern Lake has now been replaced by Northwestern Park. With the removal of the dam, salmon and migratory trout can make there way from the ocean all the way up the White Salmon River and past the house for several miles upstream. During migration fish can be seen jumping Husum Falls. Dam removal also provides rafters and kayakers the ability to float all the way down to the mouth of the White Salmon and into the Columbia. Oregon Public Broadcasting (OPB) and Oregon Field Guide released this documentary on the White Salmon River and dam removal

Fishing

As mentioned above, with the removal of the dam, salmon and migratory trout now freely swim up past the house for several miles. There are fishing options accesible right off the property and plenty more in the area and nearby creeks and streams. Fishing permits are available at the gas station in BZ Corner 4 miles north of the house on Hwy 141. The Gorge Fly Shop in Hood River is a great resource for local fishing - equipment, guided tours, rentals or general info.
